After opening the port, there was increasement in the number of Japanese settlers in Busan and Japanese cemetery was made in Ami-dong valley. Ami-dong became known as a town of crematorium as crematorium moved to the entrance of cemetery. As a lot of returnees came to Busan after independence and those who didn't have place to go started to settle down around the cemetery as well as refugees of Korean war did. The refugees resided around Ami-dong and worked daily at the port and Jagalchi Market.
