On November 1, 1963, Busan Cooperative Fish Market was originally established at the 1st Pier of the port as Busan General Fish Market, to improve the welfare of fishermen and protect the customers.
About 50,000 tons of fish went through this market per year back in 1960. Today, the daily trade can go up to 3,200 tons (160,000 boxes) a day, making it the biggest fish market in Korea.
Busan Cooperative Fish Market was established on November 1, 1963 to improve the welfare of fishermen, then named Busan General Fish Market, at the 1st Pier of the port. The market was renamed Busan Cooperative Fish Market on January 20, 1971 at the time of the revision of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperation Act.
The construction for the new market began on October 15, 1971 following a groundbreaking ceremony at Namhang reclaimed land. After construction was completed on December 20, 1972, the market moved to where it is today on January 22, 1973.
Busan Cooperative Fish Market was co-founded by five Busan-based fisheries cooperative unions: Busan Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, Federation of Large Trawl Fisheries Cooperatives, Federation of Large Net Fisheries Cooperatives, Seonam District Federation of Trawl Fisheries Cooperatives, and Gyeongnam Federation of Fixed Shore Net Fisheries Cooperatives. The five cooperatives run the market together on a consignment sale system and operates multiple businesses. The market that used to move 50,000 tons of fish each year in the 1960s has now grown into the top fish market in Korea that trades up to 3,200 tons (160,000 boxes) of fish a day.
