The Amnam-dong Shell mound

Shell Mound in Amnam-dong

Location The National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service Center about two kilometers southwest of Songdo Beach stands were the shell mound once was. There is no trace of the shell mound to be found.

The shell mound was found in the lowland past Busan Port and Gamcheon Port where the geographical features make it a desirable settlement.
Torii Ryūzō and other archaeologists discovered ancient relics at the shell mound during Japan’s colonial rule. Some of them were said to have been sent to the Joseon Government-General Museum (now National Museum of Korea) but it is difficult to determine which came from the Shell Mound in Amnam-dong.
A Japanese by the name of Giyono kept some of the relics in his private collection until it was donated to Tenri University in Japan. The rubbings of the pottery and survey map have been found among Umehara’s archaeological records which are the only documents that offer a glimpse of what the relics were. The collection is thought to be a fragment of a clay pot with light comb patterns, two ground stone axes, one shell bracelet, and spear point made of bone. The Shell Mound is thought to have come from the same era as those discovered in Dongsam-dong (portions from second floor of first mound and second mound) and in Yul-ri, Geumgok-dong.
