Seokseongsanseong, stone Mountain Fortress

Seokseongsanseong, stone Mountain Fortress

According to Dongnaebuji (Record of Dongnae) Seokseongsan Mountain was approximately 15.7 kilometers south of Dongnae-bu. The book also says that the fortress on that mountain had a beacon fire station that had been relocated to Gubong.
Scholars today assume that Seokseongsan mentioned in Dongnaebuji refers to Cheonmasan Mountain in Nambumin-dong. It is thought that the mountain was renamed after the state-run horse pasture at the foot of Seokseongsan during the Joseon Dynasty.

The name Seokseongsan may have originated from the stone fortress on the mountain. The summit of Seokseongsan offers an open view of the South Sea and East Sea. It is likely that the fortress was built high up on the mountain when the Japanese invasions were at their peak. According to Busanbusa wongo (History of Busan-bu) Cheonmasanseong Fortress was already there by the time the Silla Dynasty unified the Three Kingdoms. The book also states that there was a beacon fire station to signal an invasion, but it had been heavily damaged and abandoned.
