The Full Moon Festival

The Full Moon Festival, Seo-gu’s unique way of celebrating the First Full Moon!

Songdo Culture & Festival Committee has organized Songdo Full Moon Festival since 1999 in order to inherit and continue local traditions and bid good health and harmony to the community. It has become a much-anticipated winter festival ever since.

A bonfire in a size proportionate to that year is made; for instance, the bonfire was 20.12 meters high in 2012 and 20.13m in 2013.

Those who come to the festival wait for the moon to rise after tying a note, wishing their family peace and harmony.

The visitors can watch the moon calling ritual, boat parade, folk performances, and farm music as they wait for the moon to rise over Songdo Beach. When the sky turns dark on the day of the First Full Moon, the people make a wish upon the moon as they watch the bonfire burn up to the sky. The massive bonfire is the biggest annual attraction. The bonfire burns into the night and cheered on by the people on the beach.

Songdo Beach became open to the public in 1913, becoming the first beach available for the leisure-seeking public. Visit the beach this winter for a memorable experience.
