Earthenware Bowl with Raised Pattern

The earthenware bowl was discovered in the Shell Mound in Yeongseon-dong, Busan that dates back to the early Neolithic era. The raised patterns are common in Neolithic relics found all over Korea but the bowl shape is extremely rare among other relics. The half-sphere shape raised pattern earthenware has a short spout on one side to make it easier to pour the contents of the bowl.

‘W’ shaped clay was attached to the top of the bowl, pressed down, and decorated with comb patterns for aesthetic effect. The clay used for the earthenware is yellow brown in color and turns black closer to the base. Sand was mixed with clay to prevent cracks but the earthenware is perishable in high temperatures. Shell Mound in Yeongseon-dong was where Yeongseon-dong Police Station was located in the past. The site has been destroyed due to urban development.
