The Origin of 'Dong' Names
Bumindong

Bumin-dong

The port area of Namhang (current area of Nampo-dong, Chungmu-dong, Nambumin-dong and Bumin-dong) is called Buminpo.

From the past, it was called 'Satdi' written 'Choryang' as Chinese character. However, Haejeongri (current Choryang) became Choryang so that a wide area including the area from Bumin-dong to Choryang became being called 'Choryang'. As it was a wide area, locals called Choryang of Buminpo the Old Choryang and Choryang of Haejeongri the New Chorayng until the opening of the port.

Jeong HyunDuk, who was the Dongnae Magistrate in 1867, thought there couldn't be two Choraying in the same town so he changed the Old Choryang to Bumin-dong. It seems that Bumin-dong originated its name from Buminpo. There are two views about the origin of Buminpo's name that it might be from the meaning of a port used by locals of Busanbugok or the meaning of rich local living in the area.
