The Origin of 'Dong' Names
Amnam dong

Amnam-dong

Amnam-dong located in southern Janggun peninsula stretched from the southern foot of Mt. Cheonma to Songdo shore.

Its name originated from Amnam-ri, Saha-myeon, Dongrae-gun. In a document, the Chinese character of Am used double meaning as rock and dark. Thus it is thought that its name originated from southern part of Ami-gol.

Due to Satdijae, it was hard to communicate with other towns so locals lived around shore for a long time in the past. The relics of Neolithic times, shell mound was found in this area and there were thatched house along the shore of Songdo.

There are Mojipo town, Songdo town and Amnam-ri town as Amnamdong's natural towns. Mojipo town is a port town that is located in an arm of the east shore at the end of southwestern peninsula of Songdo. The name of Mojipo originated from 'Mojitgae'. Mojipo is also called 'Mochipo', 'Mojitgae'. Its name was given because there were many young mullets, 'Mojji' and it was written as 'Mojipo' in chinese character. Songdo town is derived from the fact that there was a lot of pine trees. The formation period of Songdo is unknown. As Songdo beach was opened as the first beach in South Korea, it was developed by Japanese and became a popular tourist attraction. Amnamri town which bacame Amnamdong can be found in 'Hoguchongsu' magazine in 1789. In Korean Marine magazine of 1910, there were 89 local houses and it seemed that they worked in the fishing industry.
