This is a transcript of Kumarajiva’s translation of the Lotus Sutra made in 1422 (the 4th year of King Sejong’s reign) commissioned by Buddhist Monk Deokmyeong to bid his mother the blissful rebirth in the Pure Land in the West. The letters are written in silver on indigo and there were a total of seven quires. What you see before you is the 3rd and 7th volume.

The cover is decorated with four lotus flowers. Flower patterns are drawn with gold while the text is written in silver. The head of the quire has an illustrated sutra in gold followed by the name of the volume and name of the translator, Kumarajiva. The text is written in Jomaengbu Style handwriting which is common in most sutras.

On the back of the sutra is a phrase in ink and a name of a temple ? Gwangdeoksa Temple ? in vermilion. It is assumed that the script was made at Gwangdeoksa Temple in Cheonan or placed within a Buddha statue. Treasure No. 269 Transcription of Saddharmapundarika Sutra in Silver on Indigo Paper, Volume 1, Treasure No. 390 Transcript of Saddharmapundarika Sutra Volumes 2,4,5, and 6 of Goryeo Transcription of Buddhist Sutra in Gwangdeoksa Temple are same in size, handwriting, and material with Gwangdeoksa written on the back. The three volumes at Dong-A University and seven volumes at National Museum of Korea complete the Sutra. It is a rare case where the complete book collection has been recovered among Buddhist scripts, making the Sutra even more valuable.
